Adopting a newborn in the United Kingdom, especially through domestic adoption, may appear to be an appealing option for individuals or couples seeking to expand their families. However, it is essential to acknowledge the reality that adopting a newborn is not a common or feasible plan for the vast majority of prospective adopters. However, instead of getting disheartened, it’s important to open our hearts to the more likely possibility of adopting a young child.
To understand the scarcity of newborn adoption opportunities, it is essential to examine the statistics. In the past year, only 96 children under the age of one were adopted in the UK. This figure makes up just approximately 2% of the total number of over 4,000 adoptions that took place. It is worth noting that this number includes both international adoption and surrogacy arrangements, of which the split remains unknown but is likely to be a significant proportion within the 96 children.
Furthermore, In cases where newborns are considered for adoption, they often have older siblings who have already been adopted. It is a common practice to offer the opportunity for adopting these very young children to the families who have already adopted their birth siblings. This arrangement promotes the goal of maintaining family connections, ensuring that siblings can grow up together within the same adoptive family. Consequently, the availability of newborns for adoptive parents who have not already adopted older children becomes extremely limited in these circumstances.
Given these factors, it is crucial to reassess the realistic nature of planning for the adoption of a newborn in the UK through domestic adoption. While surrogacy and international adoption remain options, both of these routes come with significant financial implications and are not viable for most people. It is important to recognise that adopting a newborn domestically is an exceptional occurrence, and it is exceedingly rare for someone to adopt a child under the age of one via this avenue.
One potential avenue to consider when looking to adopt is to explore the option of adopting a sibling group consisting of one young child and one slightly older child. Adopting a sibling group offers a unique opportunity to provide a stable and nurturing environment for siblings to grow and thrive together. By adopting a sibling group, you not only ensure that the children have each other for support and companionship throughout their lives but also help ensure their bond is preserved. The availability for newborn babies for adoptive parents who have not already adopted older children is limited as these newborns are offered to the adoptive parents of the older siblings to ensure the family unit stays together where possible.
Adopting a young child presents a different but equally fulfilling path toward parenthood. Unlike with newborns, the availability of young children for adoption is often higher, providing families with a greater likelihood of finding a match. By shifting the focus to older infants, toddlers, or school-aged children, families open themselves up to a vast number of children that deserve a loving home. When adopting a young child, prospective parents can witness incredible growth and development milestones first-hand. They have the opportunity to provide stability, love, and support during a crucial phase of a child’s life.
While the idea of adopting a newborn may capture many prospective parents interest, it’s important to embrace the reality and consider the more likely possibility of adopting a young child. The rewards of adopting a child, regardless of age, are immeasurable.
